Eastern Cape, South Africa – July 31, 2025: A tragic incident has shocked South Africa as 39 boys lost their lives during the traditional Ulwaluko initiation ceremony in the Eastern Cape province.

This sacred rite of passage, practiced by the Xhosa community, became deadly due to unregulated initiation schools using unsafe, unsanitary tools and lacking trained medical supervision. Many of the

victims reportedly suffered from sepsis, gangrene, dehydration, and mutilation.

Authorities revealed that over the past 5 years, more than 360 boys have died during these traditional circumcision rituals. The year 2024 alone saw 93 deaths and multiple genital amputations.

Health officials and cultural leaders are demanding urgent reforms. Many call for a complete ban on illegal initiation schools and a stronger emphasis on medical safety while respecting cultural practices.
